The Purple Line is the backbone of Namma Metro and the corridor that opened first, in 2011. It runs 43.5 km east to west, from Whitefield (Kadugodi) through the Hoodi and Indiranagar corridors, under the city centre at Cubbon Park and Majestic, then out west through Vijayanagar to Challaghatta.
The central section between Baiyyappanahalli and Magadi Road is underground, which is why journeys through the middle of the line are noticeably faster than road alternatives at any hour. It is also the busiest line on the network: the Whitefield end feeds the eastern IT corridor, and Majestic connects it to the Green Line, the KSR city railway station and the Kempegowda bus terminals.
Namma Metro is operated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL). Three lines carry passengers today — Purple, Green and Yellow — covering roughly 97 km and 85 stations between them. Two more, the Pink and Blue Lines, are under construction and will take the network past 175 km once complete.
The operational network is shaped like a cross. The Purple Line runs east to west, the Green Line north to south, and the two meet at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Station — Majestic — which is the single interchange for most journeys across the city and the busiest station on the system by a wide margin. The Yellow Line branches off the Green Line at Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road and heads south-east to Electronic City.
That shape is why so many cross-city trips route through Majestic today, and why the Pink and Blue Lines matter more than their length suggests. Both are orbital rather than radial: they add interchanges at Jayadeva Hospital, MG Road, Nagawara, Central Silk Board and Krishnaraja Puram, letting passengers move between corridors without passing through the centre at all.
Only two interchanges are usable today. Majestic connects the Purple and Green Lines and is directly linked to KSR Bengaluru City railway station and the Kempegowda bus terminals. Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road connects the Green and Yellow Lines. Changing lines at either is free — interchanges sit inside the paid area, so a single token or smart card tap covers the whole journey.
Fares are distance-based, running from ₹10 for the shortest hops to ₹90 end to end. A Namma Metro smart card takes 5% off during weekday peak hours and 10% at all other times, which is worth it for anyone travelling more than occasionally. Children under 3 ft in height travel free.
